Something I picked up today re: math homework in K-12.
Applicable elsewhere, nowhere more than in art and design school.
"Show your work" also applies to things like calendars and other personal time-management systems.

Printing, Circles

Pages 3 - 8 explain how to print up to 227 inches long using illustrator's tile feature. My book is 216 inches long so hopefully I am in the clear of needing to download any special printing software. I'm going to prepare an illustrator file that will allow me to print two books side by side with very thin trim marks.

I added circles to the map to make the numbers more legible. The red circles with white text had too much pop. I instead opted with white circles and red type.

Ready for print?

I've gone through for spelling and formatting multiple times. I have the file prepared for the printer. I will bring in my laptop to class to share. Not sure if I am ready to print. I would like to be ready to print as to have that much extra time to be ready for my show.

Shoe Disassembly Part 2

This weekend I took apart another shoe and documented each step I took during the process

I also made a video of a third disassembly which I'm still editing.

Just a reminder, that we'll be meeting tomorrow with Mary Bucci McCoy's section of Graphic Design 1.
Class starts at 8:30, please be on time.

Bring physical work you might show to class, but we'll also be able to present on the flat screen monitor, via either my laptop or a school machine. The GD1 people are interested in what goes on in Seminar, and about the design concentration in general. Our having two Book Arts people in Seminar makes it more interesting. There should be time for some discussion about your work and any questions they might have.

The GD1 class will be completing their current project for Wednesday. I hope we'll be able to get a glimpse of that, too. If we're done early, we can repair back to H-309.

Other than that there's not much new, I've just been finalizing postcards/business cards and printing them all, I printed my graph vinyl to scale and cut out the shapes so that I have stencils to place them in the correct positions if I decide that's how I want to go. I also dug through my stuff to find an old ipod and bought headphones so that I can have the sound aspect in my show so that people can hear it being read without being a performance because I'd rather have people hear it with headphones blocking out the rest of the sound so they can experience it while focusing solely on the words without any other noise distracting it. So I'm basically finalizing everything for installation and then once the show is over I'll be revisiting the language, exploring sound more, and taking it in new/different directions.

Designer (and Montserrat alum) Aaron Bouvier will be joining us on Monday 21 October, at 9:30.
Aaron has a background in drawing, painting and printmaking; his work can be seen at aaronbouvier.com. You'll also find links to his tumblr and other channels.

Aaron will be back the next day (Tuesday) for a Visiting Artist talk at 11:30. He will speak about his experiences designing the iconic image for One Heart Boston, which benefits The One Fund Boston and all victims of the tragic events surrounding this year’s Boston Marathon.

The next day (Wednesday, 23 October) brings another Visiting Artist of interest — Jennifer Hom will talk about her work as a Google Doodler. She'll not be coming to Seminar, but speaking in H-201 at 11:30am.

Monday 28 October — Seminar may be doing a joint-venture meeting with a section of Graphic Design 1 running at the same time. Seminarians make brief presentations of their work, and talk about Seminar generally to the GD1 students. Stay tuned, this may get more involved and two-way.

Design alumna Lindsey Mason will be joining us on Wednesday the 30th. Some of you will remember her process documentation of work with a (dismantled) sewing machine, and costumes.

I will be taking a 1 on 1 class at Danger!Awesome in Cambridge.
After the class I will either use their equipment to do my own laser cuts or have them do it for me.

sound ....and stuff

I've been thinking about the feedback I got at my review and have been asking people to read the poem while I record it to see how they would read it. Here's two examples.

I met with Andy and went over everything that needed to be done for my vinyl, I added the graphs I did last semester and got them in three varying sizes since I'm not 100% sure how I want to use it... I was also thinking of using the side of the movable wall for something I created last semester. I had created these abstract line drawings that I thought of blowing up and only taking a sliver of it and painting it a light gray onto the wall...but I'm still just throwing around ideas. this is a random example, but not the best one I have (i have to dig through my hard drive for the others)

and i've been working on business card ideas 

I feel like I've been focusing too much on what my show will look like and not enough on pushing the work as much as I can so I'm trying to make myself worry less about that and more about pushing each piece. The vinyl type is all set because I had to order it right away, but the placement is tbd. I'm intrigued with the sound aspect so I want to record more people and see where that takes me.

Just something I worked on during the weekend. I used all my own art. Right now I'm working on the next piece which will be Snow White.

My weekend of progress.

I wrote the language for my proposal and I started printing my collages.

On Saturday I scanned one of the collages into the computer and brought it into photoshop. I chose to use one of the smaller 4x4 inch collages that I made recently. I printed two copies of the same image but they were both at different levels of contrast and texture. One of the images was formatted to a full threshold layer (making it look similar to a high contrast photo copy) and the other was formatted to have a halftone texture to it. Once I printed these two images out on paper I was excited to prepare the screen and burn the image into it. I printed a few proofs on canvas and a few on pieces of scrap cotton that I had.

After I washed the screen out it provided the two collages next to each other. This is what the screen looks like with the images burnt into it, (ignore the old YFC design on it, it may be hard to see the collages).  

I chose to print some proofs today and this is what a few of them came out to look like.

This is what the thresh hold layer looks like when it's printed with black ink. 

And this is the halftone layer by itself in red ink.

This is what that layer looks like with the halftone printed on top of it in a different color. I chose red because at the time, I felt that it would show the difference between the two layers. You can see that the red layer is over lapped because the print must have shifted on accident when I put the screen down. It looks kinda trippy. 

I decided to play around a bit and print a halftone layer on a threshold print but I rotated it to the left. I thought it looked pretty cool I really like the textures and details that it created.

I think that this was a good start to experimenting with the collages. I'm really happy with how these came out. I plan to spend some day this week burning another collage into a screen of mine and seeing what I can come up with. I also plan to try dying some shirts with fabric dye.

Unsystematic is how I'm feeling about this weekend's work. I'm exhausted and nauseated from the smell of boiled down plant matter (really need to get on the out door fire pit) but I'm excited about the dye achievements which i'll bring in for show and tell tomorrow.

John and I transferred briefly about the poetry of the crocheted brick and the possibility of incorporating more unusual found objects rather than practical products... so I went on the hunt. Down at Pavilion beach beside the decaying fish factory is where most of these photos were taken, and i found a few great objects... although i must say i'm a little bit lost on why these things are inspiring to me or how they relate to naturally dyed material but i thought i would explore regardless. Another fun adventure was pruning some Golden Rod from the field behind my house (in the pouring rain), it was hard to find any without a cluster of bees but all in all... it was a success... and the bees were unharmed.
