I originally wanted to use a section of 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg but in order to understand any of it you really need to read the full chapters which are too long so I chose an interview with him instead focusing on marketing and how they target your habits.

wednesday, and an observation

The observation, first: Whitney, on Monday —
That we ask ourselves what we want to get out of, learn from, our work.
Does it lead to acquisition of new skills? a changed/broadened framework in which we operate?
Does it help us move from point A to point B?

One way of thinking about work, is that it is construction of a scaffold, that then falls away, to yield new work, that itself is a scaffold that falls away, and so on.

Regarding mathematics, mathematical modeling and 3D printing, which we discussed on Monday, take a look at the projects at Neri Oxman's website. Oxman was one of the presenters at the Smart Clothes conference at the Radcliffe Institute, last week. New Supplies!

Forgetting everything in NH isn't all that bad. I have all new materials and I'm excited to see what I will create when I just turn off my brain and crank them out.

Reading for Wednesday (just the first link)

At first I was going to have you guys read a section from The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst. It made sense because it talks about how fibonacci's sequence can be used to keep type and and the over all design proportionate. However I just wasn't thrilled by it. So here's what I picked instead:

Also I'm not sure if anyone likes the show Criminal Minds but there is an episode where the bad guy uses fibonacci sequence in a kidnapping. I thought that was funny

Shoe Drawings Part 2

I tried to do some more drawings with the shoe parts. I had to scan them in as text instead of black and white since the black and white drawings were very, very fine and I did not trust my extraction abilities:

I then took these drawings and made some piece with them. I think they're pretty interesting, but I'm not sure if this is the right direction.

Untitled

I started to take notes for these stories to make sure I could keep them straight. A lot of these stories can easily be confusing because they reuse characters/ same themed animals.

I'm trying to have these book covers have a little more structure with title placement and messing around with the bars. I've set these 5 up like this, but I think every 5 or so I'll change it slightly to have mini series. The Child of Saint Mary is probably my favorite out of these. Also I believe my next 5 or so are going to be hand collaged and not straight detail. I think I can get a better idea of what I need for these covers when I do notes with them. I also want to start playing with textures.

Congratulations to Rebecca for last week's "habit" installation in the Queens! show. People were clearly interested in that bifurcated column of text. Some tried to read it aloud (I know I did). Others may have looked for orientation, perhaps from the colored markings on the floor!

For tomorrow Wednesday, please read the essay I distributed last week, Jennifer L. Roberts her "The Power of Patience." It appeared in the November-December 2013 issue of Harvard Magazine, and can also be found directly here.

I Love You Not

I have come up with an arrangement for the coffins even though I don't have them all and none are decorated. I am thinking about daisies and the whole "he loves me... he loves me not" thing. Obviously I'd have to secure the bottoms to a table or whatever they will be on so the placement doesn't get screwed with. 

Now I'm trying to figure out how I'm actually going to decorate them. I want to mould (...mold?) clay around each coffin and set gemstones into them but I'm not really sure how that would work. Some clays you need to bake to set and I can't put a cardboard box in an oven. Does anyone know anything about clay? Will it stick to the cardboard? Do I have to bake it?
