still working on the graphs. I got rid of the inner/outer circles and just have one circle that goes to 1440 because the highest page that uses habit is 1391 (in vol 2 but assuming they're one continuous book). The sizes of the dots represent different things: the smallest is when it's used in a header/footer and not in the actual text, the medium dots are when it's just used in the text, and the larger dots are when there's two or more uses of habit on one page. I've started trying to go through the uses of habit in the book and trying to find out if any relate to one of my graphs five habits and then giving them the same colors or just grouping the uses into five categories and giving them their own colors but it's extremely time consuming so I think that I'll have to finish that during winter break.

I was sick all vacation so I didn't get to do as much work as I wanted to but I used an image I found online that divides the circle up into 360 degrees. My original graphs have an inner circle for the morning and the outer is the evening, so I used an inner circle for pages 1-360 of the book and an outer circle for pages 361-720. The dots I placed represent the page number William James used habit, and also where on the page it appeared - I did volume 1 and 2 separately and then put them together.

I'll bring in hard copies to class tomorrow. I originally wanted to use a section of 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg but in order to understand any of it you really need to read the full chapters which are too long so I chose an interview with him instead focusing on marketing and how they target your habits.

Other than that there's not much new, I've just been finalizing postcards/business cards and printing them all, I printed my graph vinyl to scale and cut out the shapes so that I have stencils to place them in the correct positions if I decide that's how I want to go. I also dug through my stuff to find an old ipod and bought headphones so that I can have the sound aspect in my show so that people can hear it being read without being a performance because I'd rather have people hear it with headphones blocking out the rest of the sound so they can experience it while focusing solely on the words without any other noise distracting it. So I'm basically finalizing everything for installation and then once the show is over I'll be revisiting the language, exploring sound more, and taking it in new/different directions.

i'm thinking of keeping the e-mail off of it. rwallacedesign is such a long name and I didn't like having it there twice for email and website.....and  there's a contact page on my website so people could email me there.

sound ....and stuff

I've been thinking about the feedback I got at my review and have been asking people to read the poem while I record it to see how they would read it. Here's two examples.

I met with Andy and went over everything that needed to be done for my vinyl, I added the graphs I did last semester and got them in three varying sizes since I'm not 100% sure how I want to use it... I was also thinking of using the side of the movable wall for something I created last semester. I had created these abstract line drawings that I thought of blowing up and only taking a sliver of it and painting it a light gray onto the wall...but I'm still just throwing around ideas. this is a random example, but not the best one I have (i have to dig through my hard drive for the others)

and i've been working on business card ideas 

I feel like I've been focusing too much on what my show will look like and not enough on pushing the work as much as I can so I'm trying to make myself worry less about that and more about pushing each piece. The vinyl type is all set because I had to order it right away, but the placement is tbd. I'm intrigued with the sound aspect so I want to record more people and see where that takes me.

I've been thinking about how I'm going to lay everything out more too.

I know I want the shelves to be very simple and painted the same color white as the walls. The lengths are just ideas for now, I need to get everything finished before I finalize what size the shelves are. But I am thinking of having the "h_b_t" as  a 3 feet long piece of vinyl and the text on the wall is 100 pt type that runs 12 feet tall (height of walls) and about 4 feet wide. I need to finalize the vinyl ASAP because he needs time to get it printed. 

 

 I've been working on is my artist statement and how I want it displayed. I want it on a postcard type thing with the Marcel proust quote, I spent most of the time on that focusing on the language and tried to incorporate my original writing with a suggestion John gave me. I want a simple layout and text, but I need to decide if I want business cards as well and what information should go on the artist statement cards (right now I just have the quote, my statement, name and website)

And lastly I have been tinkering around with creating my website (www.rwallacedesign.com) I want it to be as good as i can make it by my show so that people can take my cards and visit my website if they're interested

I played around more with the way my books were laid out. i took your suggestion and made the mini book have larger font with only a few words on each page, and i got rid of that weird spacing in the big book

h_b_t

I have a bunch of ideas/first drafts for different things:

title: h_b_t

statement: H_b_t is an exploration, through both research and practice, of the impact that habits have on our lives. Using William James' "Principles of Psychology vol. 1 & 2," I examined and analyzed his views while recording every instance he used the word "habit(s)." Through the poems and visual design that I created, I intend to make my audience aware of the impact that habits have on their lives while hoping they interpret the poems in their own way.

I'm working on trying to nail done my statement so that I can give it to the gallery and I'd like to make little cards (not sure on exact size, but probably a little smaller than postcard size) with my statement on it to leave on a shelf at the show for people to take.

book:

I did a new layout for one of my books. I used the suggestion of having the blank spaces where habit is supposed to be line up, and I made choices on what words before and after to keep and what words to get rid of and I also re-ordered it in a way that I liked. 

mini-book:

I also made a mini version of the book. It's not exactly the same - the order is the same but even more words were taken out. I definitely need to fix some of the pages (some words get cut off, etc.) But I was hoping to make a bunch of these to have as take aways so people can have a pocket poetry book of my work.

layout:

My group has gone to the gallery a few times and we finally decided on who gets what space, so I've been sketching out ideas for what I want mine to look like. I have one of the moveable walls and another wall, so I was thinking of putting a shelf on the movable wall (to hold business cards, my statement, mini books, and maybe the other books - although I might put the other books on the other wall). With my title above the shelf. I'm also debating whether I want to paint the moveable wall black and have a black shelf with white vinyl above it and my takeaways will be mostly white sitting on the shelf. The squiggly lines are the vinyl - I'm planning on taking the lines from the book and starting them at the top of the wall and then have them continue onto the floor til about two feet past the moveable wall (I estimated the wall is ten feet and the floor piece would also be ten feet but I need to go back and get exact measurements)...Then I was also thinking of making a more expressive book with the poem and a poster to go along with that (which is what the rectangle and question mark are supposed to be) 

I've been playing around laying out the 'poem' in different ways in book-form. I've decided I like large margins and something on the simpler side like these

then I started thinking that maybe I'd rather lay it out as a poster. I feel like more people would actually read it (and read more of it) if it was a poster as opposed to a book. And I'm thinking that if I do create some sort of poster then I could make a bunch of mini books for people to take with them of it. I tried laying it out as I was with the books (simple, white and black...) and then I also tried a more expressive way (i only posted a picture of the top corner because I didn't want to go create the whole thing before getting opinions.)

I got sick of being on the computer and was thinking about the show and was thinking of how to display the name (which as of now is still 'habitual chaos') and quickly tried this: 

 It's obviously extremely messy but I didn't want to spend a lot of time on it, it was more of an experiment. But I was thinking of doing this on wood (painted white to match the walls in the gallery), nails, and string instead of just using vinyl. I thought it was a creative way to use typography, and the straight clean lines of habitual contrasting with the messier 'chaotic' lines in chaos would reflect my ideas in the name in a creative way. But I'm not 100% sure.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions about all this?
