Reminder, we'll meet at 8:30 and walk (those who wish may drive, cycle, helicopter, teleport, etc., but I'll be walking, anyway) to Porter Mill for our visit to Melissa Gruntkowsky's studio, PressBound.

I won't mind if some just show up — on time, not later than 9:00am — at Porter Mill, at 95 Rantoul (just beyond the Beverly Depot).

Melissa will also be giving a visiting artist talk at 11:30, in H-201.

A couple days ago I had to accompany my roommate on a drive to the airport and on our way back we passed a sign for a shrine I had been meaning to go see. It was seriously fate that we came across it.

And I must add - that morning I decided to go along on the ride impulsively and I was wearing pajamas.. A onesie.. With feet to be exact. I can't believe I went to a national religious site in footsie pajamas! I felt so disrespectful but then I thought the people around may just assume I was very ill with something horrible and that I came directly from my hospital bed

Shoe Drawings

I started out drawing the parts of the shoes I had taken apart.

My original plan was to make patterns with the pieces, but then I decided to try something more abstract by overlaying them.

I don't really know where this is going, but it was just an experiment to try things out

I think I enjoy the ones that are more basic like the top image. I like the white space with lines going through them. I think for my next couple of Covers I'm going to do more like the style on top rather then the bottom. The bottom one "The bright sun will bring it to light" I gave my self a challenge by only giving myself 20 minutes to do a book cover and I did it, am I happy with the results - not at all but it's always fun to try to rase the clock.

Experimenting with pieces of an image

So I decided that I am going to burn these two images into a screen and print them onto a shirt. I plan to print not only on the front of the tee but all the way around. It would be interesting to see how it would look wrapped around the shirt. Then after that I might take some of the fabric dye that I have and dye sections of the shirt and it'll look like a big collaged t-shirt. I am just experimenting with images. Here is the collage that I subtracted some of the pieces from.

PS: I'm still currently searching for an article / topic to discuss in class on Wednesday.

presentations

As we discussed on Weds 30 October, and several times earlier in the semester, each student will assign a reading (or some other learning activity), and lead a discussion of it. The topic should relate to her or his work in some way.

I'm happy to help you figure out a reading, or online search, or whatever it is that you think will best serve the discussion and your own work in progress. The total time for presentation + discussion might be 20-30 minutes. You've seen me do it: assign a reading, walk through it, provide some context, encourage some reflection about how it might pertain to one's own practice.
